Checklist

Use this check list to verify that you have properly configured your hardware and software environment to ensure successful installation and operation of your MSC-LIMS system.

MSC-LIMS Pre-Installation Check List

Workstation requirements for a single-user installation or each workstation in a multi-user installation:
  Minimum Pentium 233 MHz CPU
  Minimum 64MB RAM (128MB recommended)
  Minimum 250MB available disk space
  Minimum 800 x 600 small font display resolution
  Windows 98/NT/2000/XP
  Available serial port if barcode hardware will be used
  Connection to local or network printer for report generation
  CD-ROM drive (at least one workstation)
  Microsoft Excel 97 or newer version (optional)
Additional workstation requirements in a multi-user installation:
  Network interface card, cabling, and software to connect to file server
  File server login account
  Read, write, create, and delete file privileges in the file server's MSC-LIMS data directory
File server requirements in a multi-user installation:
  File server can be either a dedicated file server or a designated workstation in a peer-to- peer network
  Minimum 250MB available disk space
  Login account(s) for MSC-LIMS users
  File directory for MSC-LIMS data
  File directory for MSC-LIMS workstation installation software
  Read, write, create, and delete file privileges in the MSC-LIMS data directory for all MSC-LIMS users
Additional items to consider:
  At least one copy of Microsoft Access 2002 is necessary if you plan on customizing the MSC-LIMS software
  Hardware and software for overnight backup of MSC-LIMS database
  Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) on file server
  Acceptable network performance for expected number of concurrent users and volume of data generated (factors to consider: network operating system, topology, cabling, interface cards, server RAM, server disk speed/capacity, concurrent users, etc.)
  Disaster recovery strategy (backup strategy, off-site data storage, etc.)
  Internet e-mail for technical support
  Internet access (or modem and available phone line) and VNC or pcAnywhere32 software for technical support via remote access
  File compression software such as WinZip is useful when transferring software and data files via e-mail for technical support
